Old Town
Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Venetian Harbour of Chania which is easy accessible with taxi from our hotel in Platanias or with the frequent local bus services.; stroll along the pedestrian streets of the Old Town and shop for souvenirs, arts and crafts. The two largest museums in Chania are the newbuilt Archaeological Museum of Chania which is located in Chalepa, in the eastern part of Chania and the Maritime Museum of Crete, located in the Venetian harbour. The historical town of Chania within centuries-old fortifications and built amphitheatrically around its picturesque old harbour, throughout the centuries it has been under Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish rule, is always full of life. The animated discussions on the terraces lining the waterfront, and the arrival of the first fishermen with the traditional caiques creates a unique scenery. It is a place where you could easily spend two or three days wondering around the quite narrow, streets, with boutiques and art shops, cafés and restaurants which are usually bustling with life .
The whole prefecture of Chania has amazing Gorges which is the hiking paradise for any hiker. Samarias Gorge is the most popular and famous gorge and has more than half a million visitors every year. It is the longest, about 17 km, also one of the most beautiful gorges in Europe. The walk takes around six hours, and it’s recommended to buy an excursion, so you have a guide.
There are other gorges too. Some generally quieter and less demanding. The Agia Irini Gorge (7.5 km from the village of Agia Irini to Sougia) and the Imbros gorge (8 km from the village of Imbros to Komitades are also popular.
